During the first Test match between Pakistan and Bangladesh in Rawalpindi, veteran all-rounder Shakib Al Hasan was fined 10 percent of his match fee for breaching the International Cricket Council’s (ICC) Code of Conduct. The incident occurred when Shakib, frustrated by Mohammad Rizwan's apparent delays, threw the ball at him during Sunday’s play.
On Day 5, Shakib was handed a fine and a demerit point after being found in violation of Article 2.9 of the ICC’s Code of Conduct, which relates to the inappropriate or dangerous throwing of equipment at a player or official during an international match. The ICC stated on August 26 confirming the penalty.
The altercation took place in the 33rd over of Pakistan’s second innings when Rizwan wasn’t ready to face Shakib’s delivery. In a moment of frustration, Shakib hurled the ball towards Rizwan, narrowly missing him. Wicketkeeper Litton Das eventually retrieved the ball, but the incident caught the attention of umpire Richard Kettleborough, who was visibly displeased.
Shakib has a history of letting his emotions get the better of him on the field. Recently, he has also been involved in controversies off the field, including being linked to an alleged murder amid political unrest in Bangladesh. The Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) even received a legal notice demanding Shakib’s suspension from international cricket due to these allegations.
Despite the controversy, Shakib played a pivotal role in Bangladesh’s historic first-ever Test victory over Pakistan. Although he struggled with the bat, he claimed four wickets in the match, including three in the second innings, as Pakistan was bowled out for 146. Bangladesh, having secured a first-innings lead of 117 runs, chased down a modest target of 30 to win by 10 wickets.
Additionally, Pakistan was found to be six overs short of the required over-rate during the match, resulting in a deduction of six points from their World Test Championship tally. Bangladesh was also docked three points for falling three overs short, despite their impressive win over their Asian rivals.
