Bangladesh all-rounder Shakib al Hasan publicly addressed his political stance on Wednesday, October 9, potentially clearing the way for his long-awaited farewell Test against South Africa at home. Following his apology, it appears that Shakib’s hopes of playing his final Test on Bangladeshi soil are now within reach.
Previously, it was reported that Shakib’s farewell Test might be jeopardised unless he clarified his position. Youth and Sports Advisor Asif Mahmud Shojib Bhuyain had emphasised that Shakib needed to make his stance clear before requesting security measures. The situation was further complicated by allegations linking Shakib to a murder case last month, adding pressure on him to break his silence.
Shakib finally addressed the public, apologising for remaining silent during the recent student protests following the fall of Sheikh Hasina’s regime. In a heartfelt Facebook post, Shakib expressed his respect and condolences to the students who sacrificed their lives or were injured in the movement.
"For those who were hurt by my silence, I sincerely apologise. I understand your feelings and, in your place, I might have felt the same way," Shakib wrote.
As he prepares for his final Test match later this month, Shakib urged his fans to support him one last time. "In this final chapter, I want you all by my side," he said, expressing his hope for a memorable farewell with his supporters standing with him.
