Sri Lanka's impressive third-day performance in their Test match against England at The Oval has put them in a strong position, needing 125 more runs to chase down a target of 219. After a shaky start, Sri Lanka’s seamers, led by Lahiru Kumara and Vishwa Fernando, dismantled England’s second innings, bowling them out for just 156.

Sri Lanka's first innings saw solid contributions from Dhananjaya de Silva (69), Kamindu Mendis (64), and Pathum Nissanka (64), although they fell short of England’s 325, trailing by 62 runs. However, on day three, England’s batting faltered, with only Jamie Smith making an impact with a quick-fire 67 off 50 balls, helping his team set a modest lead before their collapse.

Sri Lanka began their fourth innings confidently, reaching 94-1 by stumps. Pathum Nissanka led the charge with 53* alongside Kusal Mendis, after the early loss of captain Dimuth Karunaratne. With favourable conditions and just 125 runs needed, Sri Lanka is well-positioned to claim a victory on the final day of play.

Sri Lanka’s bowlers, particularly Fernando with three wickets and Kumara with four, were instrumental in shifting the match’s momentum. Their skilful use of swing and the improving pitch conditions give Sri Lanka a clear chance to finish strong and secure a consolation win in the series.
