England wicketkeeper Jamie Smith reached a historic milestone in the ongoing first Test against Sri Lanka at Emirates Old Trafford, Manchester. On the third day of the match, he scored a stunning century, becoming the youngest English wicketkeeper to achieve a Test hundred. At just 24 years and 42 days old, Smith broke a 94-year-old record previously held by Les Ames, who scored a century at 24 years and 63 days against the West Indies in Port of Spain in 1930.
After his remarkable achievement, Smith expressed his appreciation for the guidance he received from Ian Bell, despite Bell currently working as a batting consultant for Sri Lanka. Bell, a five-time Ashes winner, had previously mentored Smith during the recent English domestic competition, The Hundred, and during their time together with the England Lions.
"Belly has been a tremendous support to me, both with the Lions and while playing for Birmingham Phoenix over the last couple of years," Smith told reporters. "His insights and the extra practice sessions before this Test series made a real difference, and I’m very grateful."
The 24-year-old added, "It’s great to have someone in your corner, even if they’re with the opposing team. I really valued his help."
Reflecting on his performance, Smith said, "It was an incredible feeling to reach that milestone today. I felt calm and at ease, which allowed me to simply enjoy my cricket."
In the match itself, England secured a five-wicket win over Sri Lanka on the fourth day of the Test.
