South Africa emerged victorious at the Sir Vivian Richards Stadium
Opting to bat first, South Africa posted a formidable total of 194-4 in their allotted 20 overs. Quinton de Kock led the charge with a scintillating innings, scoring 74 runs off just 40 balls, including seven boundaries and five towering sixes. This innings marked a significant improvement for De Kock, who had struggled earlier in the tournament, showcasing his prowess as his team's leading run-scorer in T20Is.
Supporting De Kock, captain Aiden Markram also contributed with his tournament-best score of 46 off 32 deliveries, anchoring a crucial 110-run partnership with De Kock for the second wicket. Heinrich Klaasen (36*) and Tristan Stubbs (20*) provided a late flourish, adding an unbeaten 53 runs for the fifth wicket, propelling South Africa to their imposing total.
In response, the USA started strongly, reaching 50 runs in the first five overs before encountering the Proteas' pace-spin attack. Kagiso Rabada (3-18) and Anrich Nortje (1-29) struck crucial blows to peg back the American innings. Despite the setbacks, Andries Gous played a heroic innings, remaining unbeaten on 80 off 47 balls, which included five fours and an equal number of sixes.
Gous found a valuable partner in Harmeet Singh (38), with whom he stitched together a defiant 91-run partnership for the sixth wicket. Their efforts rekindled hopes of an upset, particularly when Gous smashed three sixes off Tabraiz Shamsi in the 18th over, reducing the requirement to 28 runs from the final 12 balls.
However, Rabada's exceptional bowling in the penultimate over ensured victory for South Africa, restricting the USA to 176-6 at the end of their innings. Despite Gous's valiant effort, the Proteas' earlier batting prowess and disciplined bowling ultimately sealed the match in their favour.
With this win, South Africa kick-started their Super 8 campaign on a winning note, setting up intriguing encounters ahead against West Indies and defending champions England in Group 2 of the tournament.
