South Africa will closely monitor Nortje and Coetzee from the IPL to the T20 World Cup

Both fast bowlers are returning from injuries and are being considered for selection in the T20 World Cup squad.

South Africa's white-ball coach, Rob Walter, will closely monitor Anrich Nortje and Gerald Coetzee during this year's IPL. The tournament will help Walter finalize his selection for the T20 World Cup.

Nortje and Coetzee are returning from injuries that have kept them out of action for months. Their performance at the IPL will be used to assess their readiness for the major tournament. Nortje and Coetzee are among the eight seam bowlers that South Africa could select for their 15-player touring party. The other options include Kagiso Rabada, Lungi Ngidi, Marco Jansen, Andile Phehlukwayo, Ottniel Baartman, and Lizaad Williams.

Nortje recently made a comeback in the CSA's T20 domestic tournament after his last appearance in September 2023 during a home series against Australia. He sustained a stress fracture in his back, which prevented him from participating in the ODI World Cup and the entire home international summer. In his return match for Warriors against Kwa-Zulu Inland, he opened the bowling and delivered four economical overs, conceding just 12 runs, but failed to take any wickets. There is a chance that he will play a second match for the Warriors this Sunday, as he is still in the South Africa waiting for the imminent birth of his first child. Nortje will then proceed to the IPL.

Coetzee has already left for India, where he is under the care of the Mumbai Indians medical staff as he recovers from a groin injury. He last played in the Boxing Day Test against India, where he developed pelvic inflammatory disease and was ruled out of the next match, the SA20, and the opening rounds of the domestic T20 tournament. He is also expected to miss the start of the IPL to play later in the tournament.

South Africa's nationally contracted players were required to play in the first two rounds of the CSA domestic T20 tournament, except for David Miller, who was granted time off for his wedding, and Quinton de Kock, who was granted time off for personal reasons. Miller and de Kock will be joined in the IPL by Rabada, Jansen, Markram, Klaasen, Stubbs, Brevis, Ferreira, Burger, Rossouw, and du Plessis, all of whom are in contention for the T20 World Cup. Ngidi, who was supposed to join the team, has been ruled out due to a back injury and will recover at home.

But it is not just these players that Walter will have to keep an eye on. Ryan Rickelton, Reeza Hendricks, Keshav Maharaj, Tabraiz Shamsi, Bjorn Fortuin, Baartman, and Williams are also in contention for the CSA T20 Challenge, which runs until the end of April.

South Africa will name their T20 World Cup squad towards the end of April. They will play three T20Is against the West Indies before the competition begins on 2 June.
