South African cricket legend Mike Procter has passed away at the age of 77

Former South Africa coach and cricketing legend Mike Procter died on Saturday aged 77, his wife confirmed to AFP.

According to Maryna Procter, he suffered a complication during surgery and never regained consciousness.

Procter was a renowned all-rounder who became South Africa's first post-apartheid coach. He also had a controversial stint as an International Cricket Council (ICC) match referee.

On Monday, his family announced that he had suffered a "cardiac incident" while recovering in intensive care at the hospital. He had undergone routine surgery.

Procter was being treated at a hospital near the coastal city of Durban, where he used to live.
