South African university team members receive Proteas T20I caps
The SA University XI, playing as Team SA at the African Games, will be recorded in the official T20I record books.
This is because the men's and women's T20 cricket tournaments at the African Games in Accra, Ghana, were both granted T20I status.
The SA women's squad, which won silver medals last week, was composed of SA Emerging players, while the men's team consisted of university cricketers.
All 11 players who played in South Africa's first men's match against Ghana last Sunday made their T20I debuts and received T20I Proteas caps.
This includes George van Heerden, who scored an official T20I century of 107 off 57 balls in the 134-run victory.
Additionally, three more players made their T20I debut for SA in the 70-run loss to Kenya on Monday. Nandre Burger, who was capped by the Proteas as T20I number 101 against India at the Wanderers in December, is now followed on the official list by Stellenbosch University's Lehan Botha (cap number 102), while Central University of Technology's Raps Motlhoaring (no. 115) is the most recently capped South African.
