Stubbs Shows Growth as Key Player for Proteas

Tristan Stubbs, once known for his explosive power at the back end of innings, has evolved into a mature batter for South Africa. This year, the Proteas have given him more responsibility higher in the order, allowing him to build innings and showcase his technique. His maiden ODI century against Ireland in the UAE highlighted his ability to anchor and accelerate as needed.

Recently, Test coach Shukri Conrad promoted Stubbs to the No. 3 spot, seeking to fill a long-standing gap since Hashim Amla’s retirement. On day one of the second Test against Bangladesh in Chattogram, Stubbs demonstrated his readiness for the role, reaching his maiden Test century with a mix of defence and big shots. His 106, part of a 201-run partnership with Tony de Zorzi, put the Proteas at a commanding 307/2 at stumps.

Stubbs acknowledged the challenge, especially after lunch, saying, “I had to graft it out as the ball did a bit. Reaching three figures was a relief.” He praised de Zorzi’s resilience through cramps and difficult conditions, noting how they kept each other motivated. Both batters effectively used the reverse sweep against spin, helping rotate the strike and maintain pressure.

With his controlled, mature innings and adaptability, Stubbs is proving he can be more than just a power hitter, showing promise as a well-rounded international batter for South Africa.
