After winning the T20 World Cup 2024 in Barbados, the Indian cricket team faced delays in returning home to India due to Hurricane Beryl. Originally scheduled to leave on July 3, the airport closure and flight cancellations caused them to stay in Barbados longer than anticipated. The team, along with support staff and families, had an extended stay on the island.
Rajeev Shukla, the vice-president of the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI), announced that arrangements had been made for the team to fly back to Delhi from Barbados on Wednesday evening local time, with their expected arrival in India on the evening of July 4. BCCI secretary Jay Shah was overseeing the situation to ensure the players' safe return.
Shukla shared the update on social media, expressing relief that the team was finally departing Barbados after being stranded for three days. He also confirmed that the T20 World Cup trophy was on its way back to India.
India's victory in the T20 World Cup 2024 was remarkable, with an unbeaten run in the tournament leading to a thrilling final against South Africa in Bridgetown on June 29. This win was significant as it marked India's first T20 World Cup title in 13 years, following their victory in the 2011 ODI World Cup.
