The fast bowler Williams wants to see JSK in the final
Proteas fast bowler Lizaad Williams is determined to help the Joburg Super Kings (JSK) secure their first-ever SA20 final appearance, with the 2025 decider set to be held at their home ground, the Wanderers. After falling short in the second qualifier playoff against Durban's Super Giants earlier this year and being knocked out by Sunrisers Eastern Cape in 2023, Williams sees the upcoming season as a crucial opportunity for redemption.
With the 2025 final confirmed for the Bullring on February 8, Williams emphasized the importance of reaching the final. "Having the final at the Wanderers is a significant factor. Everyone is building teams to suit their home conditions, and if we can make it to the final, playing on our home ground could give us an advantage," Williams stated at the SA20 tournament launch in Johannesburg.
However, he noted that the journey to the final would require consistent performance. "A lot happens before the final. It’s about playing consistent cricket throughout the tournament. The Sunrisers have been consistent for two seasons, and that’s what’s needed to win trophies," he added.
Williams also highlighted his personal goal for the upcoming season: staying injury-free. "I got injured just before the semi-final this year, and it affected our team balance. Right now, I’m focusing on getting my body in the best shape for the season. From a team perspective, I hope we can push past the semi-finals this time."
The 30-year-old fast bowler acknowledged the impact of SA20 on national team selection. "The SA20 is becoming a stepping stone for players aspiring to represent South Africa. We’ve seen players like Matthew Breetzke and Ryan Rickelton, who performed well in SA20, make their Proteas debuts later in the year. The competition’s standard is so high, and playing in front of packed crowds at the Wanderers helps prepare players for the pressures of international cricket."
The Joburg Super Kings will kick off their 2025 SA20 campaign on January 11 at the Wanderers against MI Cape Town.
