The historic return to the Olympics in 2028

Cricket is set to make a historic return to the Olympics in 2028, marking its first appearance in the Games since 1900. The introduction of both men’s and women’s T20 formats is a significant milestone, achieved through a collaborative effort between the International Cricket Council (ICC) and the Los Angeles 2028 Organizing Committee. This decision is anticipated to expand cricket's global reach and popularity.

Australian fast bowler Pat Cummins, who has led his team to several ICC championships, noted that while the event may seem far off, excitement will undoubtedly grow as the Olympics approach. Cummins mentioned that cricket's inclusion in the Olympics could greatly enhance the sport's legacy, especially given his own successes and experiences in international competitions.

Choosing T20 for the Olympic format caters to the fast-paced nature of the Games and is expected to encourage cricket's growth in emerging markets, particularly in the United States. Interest in cricket has surged in the U.S. with the establishment of Major League Cricket (MLC), and the country is also preparing to co-host the men’s T20 World Cup, highlighting the sport's increasing popularity in the region.

The integration of cricket in the Olympics represents a unique opportunity for ICC Associate members. Participation in the Games is likely to draw funding and infrastructural support from national Olympic organisations, benefiting the development of cricket in countries where the sport is still developing.

The International Olympic Committee (IOC) recognised cricket's global appeal by adding it alongside other sports such as flag football, lacrosse, and squash, in a bid to engage a wider audience and enhance the financial prospects of the Games.

For cricket fans, particularly in the United States, this inclusion marks a significant achievement. The USA Cricket Board expressed appreciation to the ICC and the US Olympic Committee for their efforts in realising this vision. As the countdown to the 2028 Olympics begins, cricket's return not only signifies a victory for the sport but also underscores its growing influence and potential in previously untapped markets.
