The ICC's regulations in the event of rain

The ICC has outlined the regulations that will determine the result of the T20 World Cup 2024 semi-final clash between India and England in the event of rain, giving India an advantage. Unlike the first semi-final between Afghanistan and South Africa, which had a reserve day, the second semi-final between India and England does not have this provision. The match is scheduled to commence at 10:30 AM local time, and adding a reserve day would leave the qualifying team with no time to prepare for the final scheduled for June 29.

To account for potential rain delays, an additional 250 minutes have been set aside to complete the game on the same day. Play will be attempted until 11:30 PM IST to complete the full 40-over match. If the weather causes further interruptions beyond this timeframe, overs will be deducted, resulting in a shorter match (20 overs, 15 overs, or 10 overs per side).

A minimum of 10 overs per side is required for a result to be declared, unlike the league stage and Super Eight phase where even a 5-over match could determine the outcome. If weather conditions prevent a 10-over match from concluding, the game will be abandoned.

In the event of a rain-induced abandonment, India will advance to the final due to their top finish in the Super Eight group stage. The ICC has made these rules to reward teams for their performances in the earlier rounds of the tournament.

Additional time has been allotted on the same day to ensure maximum play, and the ICC has implemented different regulations for the semi-finals to balance logistical and performance factors. This approach aims to prevent "play-travel-play" scenarios for the second semi-finalists and maintain fair competition conditions, ensuring the tournament progresses smoothly despite weather challenges.
