The punishment is inexorable

Durham quickly lost his chance to play in an England Test after taking responsibility for wagers made from 2017 to 2019.

Brydon Carse, a fast bowler for Durham and England, has been suspended for three months for breaking gambling laws.

Carse is no longer in the running to make his Test debut against the West Indies on July 10 at Lord's, the first match of the summer.

It is believed that Carse did not participate in any of the games he wagered on, which occurred more than five years ago.

“Whilst these bets were several years ago, that is no excuse and I take full responsibility for my actions,” Carse said in a statement.

“I would like to thank the England and Wales Cricket Board, Durham Cricket and the Professional Cricketers’ Association for their support during this difficult time for me. I will be working hard in the next 12 weeks to ensure that I repay that support on the field when I can return to playing.”

Carse was banned from all cricket for three months and his subsequent 13-month term was postponed for two years after the cricket regulator launched an anti-corruption probe. Carse was accused of betting on three hundred and ninety-three cricket matches between the years 2017 and 2019.

Bets were not made on games in which Carse was involved. He reportedly showed a great deal of regret, took the charges, and cooperated with the regulator during the investigation. Carse will be out of commission from May 28 to August 28.

Carse's involvement in match-fixing has not been suggested. Carse's two-year England central contract is expected to be extended.

When England selectors try to shape their approach for the post-James Anderson era this summer, his ban only makes things more difficult. Anderson was scheduled to retire after the Ashes series last summer, following Stuart Broad's retirement. The first Test against the West Indies at Lord's will take place.

Due to a pectoral injury, Josh Tongue will already be out of action for England for at least the first several summer series. Sam Cook, who is expected to make his Essex debut this summer, is side-lined due to a non-serious hamstring injury. It is also unfit for Saqib Mahmood to be chosen for Lancashire.

Olly Stone and Matt Potts will also be considered, along with Gus Atkinson of Surrey and Dillon Pennington of Nottinghamshire, who are both in the running for a debut. Jofra Archer will not be participating in Test cricket this year, but Ollie Robinson, Chris Woakes, and Mark Wood will be contenders.
