CSA CEO Pholetsi Moseki has expressed concern that only one black African player is included in the Proteas’ 15-man squad for the T20 World Cup.
With the removal of former captain Temba Bavuma, Kagiso Rabada is the sole representative of the black African community, with a total of six players of colour in the squad. This is the lowest number of players of colour in a Proteas squad for an ICC event since 2016.
Moseki informed News24 that the CSA had anticipated that the domestic cricket quota system would "create enough of a pool" of black African players for the Proteas:
“It’s a concern that we’re taking a team to the World Cup with only one black African player and in conjunction with the director of cricket [Enoch Nkwe], there were cricket reasons.”
Moseki confirmed that Walter was not required to select a specific number of players of colour for the T20 World Cup.
The targets for transformation set by the Proteas are not based on the numbers of players sent to tournaments, but rather on the numbers averaged over a season.
