Washed out, Gujarat out of the IPL play-off race

Gujarat Titans have been eliminated from the play-off race after rain forced the abandonment of their IPL match against Kolkata Knight Riders in Ahmedabad on Monday.

The teams shared a point each, confirming a top-two finish for table-toppers Kolkata, who remain the only side to have already qualified for the next stage.

The last time Kolkata finished in the top two in the league stage, they went on to win the tournament in 2012 and 2014.

The top four teams will go through to the play-offs, but the first and second-placed teams will have the advantage of two chances to qualify for the final in Chennai on 26 May.

Unseasonal rain in Ahmedabad left thousands of fans disappointed at the world's biggest cricket stadium.

The rain lasted for almost five hours as the captains finally shook hands without even winning the toss.

Shubman Gill's Gujarat, who won the IPL in their debut season in 2022 under Hardik Pandya, was knocked out of the title race along with Mumbai Indians and bottom side Punjab Kings.

Kolkata, led by Shreyas Iyer, has been the team to beat in this edition. They have 10 wins and 19 points from 13 matches, ahead of second-placed Rajasthan Royals.

Six teams, including defending champions Chennai Super Kings and Royal Challengers Bengaluru, remain in the hunt for the remaining three play-off spots.
