WCA has launched a review of the global cricket scheduling structure

The World Cricketers’ Association (WCA) has launched a significant review into what it describes as the “broken and unsustainable” structure of global cricket scheduling. The players’ union, previously known as the Federation of International Cricketers’ Associations (FICA), aims to develop a solution that harmonises international cricket and domestic leagues within a clear and coherent calendar.

The review panel includes former ECB chief executive Tom Harrison and ex-Pakistan Women’s captain Sana Mir, among others. Working alongside independent consultants, the panel will gather input from players, administrators, team owners, and broadcasters before presenting their recommendations to the WCA board.

“The current model is broken and unsustainable,” the WCA stated on Monday. “Confusing and chaotic global scheduling, with no clear relationship between international cricket and domestic leagues, is forcing players to choose between representing their country and maximising their careers. Change is urgently needed to bring clarity and value for players, boards, and fans alike.”

WCA chair Heath Mills emphasised the need for a balanced approach. “Cricket has the luxury of three core formats across both international and domestic competitions,” Mills said. “However, the game’s leadership has failed to establish a clear, global structure where they can coexist. We have virtually given up hope of such coordination happening.”

The Professional Cricketers’ Association’s research in May revealed that 81% of players are concerned about the physical strain caused by the packed domestic schedule, which leaves little room for rest and recovery. The ECB’s 2022 high-performance review suggested reducing the amount of domestic cricket, but the proposals were rejected by English county teams.

Former England captain Joe Root recently echoed these concerns, stating, “It’s clear that the schedule needs to change to see lasting benefits for English cricket.”

This review could mark a turning point in addressing the growing tension between international commitments and the expanding array of domestic leagues, which currently leave players navigating a demanding and often conflicting calendar.
