Who Will Participate In The Duleep Trophy?

The upcoming Duleep Trophy, marking the beginning of the domestic red-ball cricket season, is set to feature a mix of seasoned Indian stars and promising young talents competing for top honours. The tournament is scheduled to start on September 5, 2024, at venues in Anantapur, Andhra Pradesh, and M Chinnaswamy Stadium in Bengaluru. While prominent Indian batters like Rishabh Pant, Ishan Kishan, and Shubman Gill are expected to participate in the 2024-25 season, iconic players Virat Kohli and captain Rohit Sharma will be notable absentees.

Former Indian cricketer Suresh Raina recently expressed that star players like Kohli and Sharma should have participated in the Duleep Trophy, as it would have aided their preparations for an important upcoming Test series. Raina commented, "Yes, they should've played. We haven’t engaged in red-ball cricket since the IPL concluded. With a crucial Test series approaching, it's essential to play four-day matches and acclimate to how the pitch will behave on Day 4. I believe they're mature enough and can regroup for a few days to start practising. Family time is also important at times."

India is set to face Bangladesh in a two-match Test series starting on September 19. Raina emphasised that Bangladesh should not be underestimated, noting their strong bowling attack as a significant challenge. He views this series as vital preparation for the Border-Gavaskar Trophy.

In remarks to ANI, Raina added, "A team for the Tests will be formulated now. Having top players participate in the Duleep Trophy is a commendable initiative by the BCCI. Playing red-ball cricket offers invaluable experience."

He also warned, "You cannot afford to take Bangladesh lightly, as they possess an excellent spin bowling attack and several players who have consistently performed well. This series will serve as excellent match practice as we gear up for the tour to Australia."

Additionally, the Legends League Cricket tournament is set to take place in India and Qatar from September 11 to October 5 this year.
