Why BCCI Doesn't Want To Host More Day-Night Tests

Jay Shah, the BCCI secretary, has shed light on the Board of Control for Cricket in India's reluctance to host more day-night Tests at home. Despite the initial enthusiasm around pink-ball cricket, Shah noted that most of India's past day-night Test matches have concluded in an uncomfortably short span, typically within 2-3 days. This trend undermines the traditional five-day Test format, which could lead to dissatisfaction for paying spectators who expect a longer contest.

India’s introduction to day-night Tests began in November 2019 with a match against Bangladesh at Eden Gardens, where the game ended in just three days. Subsequent matches, including one against England, also wrapped up quickly, resulting in criticism about the match conditions, particularly the excessive advantage given to spin bowlers.

In a recent interview with the Times of India, Shah expressed his emotional connection to this situation, highlighting the concern for fans who purchase tickets for five-day matches expecting a full experience. He stated, “You buy a ticket for a five-day match, but the game ends in 2-3 days… There is no refund. I am slightly emotional about this.”

Moreover, Shah addressed the ICC's proposal for India to host the Women’s T20 World Cup, initially slated for Bangladesh but moved due to political instability there. The BCCI ultimately declined this request, stating a preference to avoid hosting consecutive World Cups, especially since India is already set to host the 50-over Women’s World Cup the following year.

Overall, the BCCI's cautious approach reflects a broader concern for maintaining the integrity and appeal of Test cricket in India, while balancing the logistical and fan experience aspects associated with these matches.
