Kagiso Rabada and Rilee Rossouw couldn't save the Punjab Kings from a 28-run defeat at the hands of Chennai Super Kings on Sunday.
Rabada was wicketless in his three overs, conceding 24 runs as Chennai posted 167-9.
Rossouw was then bowled for a duck as Punjab's run chase fell well short.
All-rounder Ravindra Jadeja was the star for Chennai, top-scoring with a 26-ball 43 before returning figures of 3-20 from his four overs of left-arm spin.
It was Chennai's sixth win in 11 matches and moved them up to third in the table.
The performance of veteran Jadeja is a welcome sign ahead of the T20 World Cup in the West Indies and USA in June.
Chennai suffered an early blow when Sri Lanka pace bowler Matheesha Pathirana was forced to return home with a hamstring injury.
Pathirana, nicknamed 'Baby Malinga' because of her swinging action modelled on former Sri Lankan quick Lasith Malinga, was Chennai's standout bowler, taking 13 wickets in six matches.
But medium-pace bowler Tushar Deshpande stepped into the breach in the absence of Pathirana and the injured Deepak Chahar and struck twice in his first over and Punjab's second in the chase.
Deshpande had Jonny Bairstow bowled for seven and then Rossouw trudged back to the pavilion in the space of four balls.
Prabhsimran Singh, who made 30, and Shahshank Singh, who made 27, tried to rebuild their stand of 53 but their departure triggered a collapse.
Jadeja struck regular blows, including to skipper Sam Curran, to rattle the middle-order and derail the chase.
Earlier, Chennai suffered from a lack of partnerships despite a second-wicket stand between skipper Ruturaj Gaikwad, who made 32, and Daryl Mitchell, who made 30.
Jadeja took charge and, with some help from the middle order, guided Chennai to a par total on the picturesque ground overlooking the Himalayas.
But there was disappointment for the home crowd on Sunday when veteran MS Dhoni fell for a first-ball duck to a slower delivery from Harshal Patel, who shared three wickets with Rahul Chahal.
Jadeja hit three fours and two sixes before being dismissed by left-arm quick Arshdeep Singh in the 20th over.
In the second match of the day, the red-hot Sunil Narine smashed a 39-ball 81 to help Kolkata Knight Riders beat Lucknow Super Giants by 98 runs to move to the top of the table.
Narine's blitz, laced with six fours and seven sixes, took Kolkata to 235-6 after they were asked to bat first in Lucknow's final home game.
Two-time champions Kolkata bowled out Lucknow for 137 in 16.1 overs to record their eighth win in 11 matches and all but guarantee a play-off berth. Second-placed Rajasthan Royals have played a game less.
