Due to a fractured left thumb, Nuwan Thushara is out of the T20I series

Sri Lanka's cricket team is facing a substantial challenge as they prepare for the T20I series against India, starting July 27 at Pallekele International Cricket Stadium. The loss of seamer Nuwan Thushara due to a fractured left thumb, sustained during practice on July 24, is a significant setback for the squad. Thushara, who has proven to be an instrumental part of the bowling attack with 19 wickets in nine T20Is at an impressive average of 14.57, was expected to be a standout performer. His highlights this year include a memorable hat-trick against Bangladesh and best figures of 5/20, alongside his excellent performance in the 2024 T20 World Cup, where he emerged as Sri Lanka's top wicket-taker with eight wickets at an average of 7.52.

In light of Thushara's injury, Dilshan Madushanka has been named as his replacement. Madushanka, having appeared in 14 T20Is and claimed 14 wickets with a higher average of 30.92, has a challenging task ahead. Despite his potential, he struggled in the recent Lanka Premier League, securing only two wickets in six matches, raising questions about his current form.

Additionally, the absence of Dushamantha Chameera from the series further compounds Sri Lanka's bowling woes, leaving the team with concerns regarding their depth and effectiveness against a formidable India side. With critical match-ups ahead, the Sri Lankan team must quickly regroup and strategise to mitigate the impact of these key player absences. They will need to lean on their remaining resources and seek to adapt under pressure to maintain competitiveness in the series.
