Shubman Gill and Sai Sudharsan scored centuries in a record-breaking 210-run opening stand to help Gujarat Titans defeat Chennai Super Kings by 35 runs in the IPL in Ahmedabad on Friday.
Chennai captain Ruturaj Gaikwad won the toss and elected to field, but failed to capitalise as Gujarat's openers chased down an imposing 231 for three.
Chennai stumbled at the start of their innings and were restricted to 196-8.
Chennai remain fourth on the table, while Gujarat move from last to eighth, keeping their hopes of qualifying for the next stage mathematically alive.
Gill and Sudharsan got into their stride quickly and raced to 58-0 in the first six overs.
Sudharsan's 103, which came off just 51 balls, featured five fours and seven sixes.
Gill's 104 was slightly slower, coming off 54 balls, but included nine fours and six sixes as both openers tore through the Chennai attack.
Their partnership equalled the IPL record for the first wicket set by KL Rahul and Quinton de Kock for Lucknow Super Giants against Kolkata Knight Riders in 2022.
However, they fell just short of the overall IPL record of 229 set by Virat Kohli and AB de Villiers for Royal Challengers Bangalore (now Bengaluru) against Gujarat Lions, the Titans' former franchise, in 2016.
Both openers fell in the 18th over to Tushar Deshpande, the only Chennai bowler to take a wicket, who finished with figures of 2-33 from his four-over spell.
India rookie Shahrukh Khan (two), the only other Gujarat wicket to fall, was run out in the final over of the innings.
Chennai, one of the pre-tournament favourites to make the play-offs, got off to the worst possible start, losing both their openers in the second over of the chase.
New Zealand opener Rachin Ravindra was run out by South Africa's David Miller in the first over.
His opening partner Ajinkya Rahane fell to rookie Sandeep Warrier for one in the next over.
Chennai's in-form captain Gaikwad lasted just three balls before hammering Umesh Yadav to the square-leg boundary, where Rashid Khan juggled the catch just inside the boundary and took it at the second attempt as he stepped back inside the rope.
Gujarat was in deep trouble at 10-3 in the third over before all-rounders Daryl Mitchell and Moeen Ali rescued the innings.
New Zealander Mitchell, who scored a 34-ball 63, and England's Ali, who made a 36-ball 56, put on a 109-run partnership.
They took the score to 119 before both were removed in successive overs by India pacer Mohit Sharma.
Sharma, who also removed dangerous and in-form all-rounder Shivam Dube (21), finished with figures of 3-31.
India all-rounder Ravindra Jadeja made 18 and MS Dhoni chipped in with an unbeaten 11-ball 26 to take Chennai to 196-8.
