Lizelle Lee has secured a two-year contract with the Hobart Hurricanes, becoming their key pre-draft signing ahead of the Women's Big Bash League (WBBL) draft. Lee, who has been residing in Tasmania since her international retirement in 2022-23, was the Hurricanes' standout batter last season, scoring 409 runs at an average of 37.18 with a strike rate of 146.07. Her performances included a match-winning, unbeaten 101 against the Melbourne Renegades.
Reflecting on her commitment to the team, Lee said, "I feel like the team made strong progress last season, and I’m looking forward to contributing with my natural game as we aim to bring Tasmania and the Hurricanes their first WBBL trophy."
Cricket Tasmania’s general manager, Salliann Beams, expressed enthusiasm about the continued partnership between Lee and Elyse Villani at the top of the order. "With Lizelle and Junior [Villani] opening, we arguably have the most experienced and talented pairing in the WBBL. Her versatility as an overseas pre-signing was crucial, and given we had the first pick in the draft, it made sense to secure someone we know can deliver," Beams said.
Lee’s impact as a game-changer, both with the bat and in the field, has been well-established during her time in international cricket with South Africa and in the WBBL.
Hurricanes head coach Jude Coleman hinted at the possibility of adding another top-four batter during the draft. The team also holds retention rights for South African fast bowler Shabnim Ismail, who took 13 wickets last season. This combination of experienced talent and strategic signings indicates that the Hurricanes are building a competitive side for the upcoming season.
