Mehidy Calls for Top-Order Accountability After Dhaka Loss

All-rounder Mehidy Hasan Miraz voiced his concerns about Bangladesh’s batting struggles following their seven-wicket defeat to South Africa in Dhaka. Despite winning the toss and batting first, Bangladesh was bundled out for just 106 on the opening day—a setback that set the tone for the match. Mehidy, who scored a crucial 97 in the second innings to avoid an innings defeat, noted that favourable conditions went to waste as the top-order collapsed early.

“Everything was in our favour, from the toss to the pitch, but we couldn’t capitalise. Runs in the first innings are essential in Test cricket, and failing there put us on the back foot from the start,” Mehidy commented. He pointed out that while Mahmudul Hasan Joy made modest contributions, other top-order players like Shadman Islam, Mominul Haque, and Najmul Hossain Shanto struggled across both innings, undermining the team’s stability.

Mehidy emphasised the importance of the top-order’s role in supporting lower-order players and helping the team establish a solid foundation. “When early wickets fall, middle-order players face the new ball, which makes it challenging to build a score,” he explained. He urged his teammates to improve their decision-making and take greater responsibility.

Mehidy also reflected on his own improvement, attributing his progress to tackling challenging batting positions. As Bangladesh heads to Chattogram, Mehidy believes this is a critical moment for the team’s batters to refocus and make the most of familiar home conditions.
