Michael: "Ollie Pope is an ideal vice-captain for England"

In a recent commentary, former England captain Michael Vaughan shared his thoughts on Ollie Pope's role as stand-in skipper, stating that he would be pleased to be proven wrong regarding the young player's leadership skills. Despite this, Vaughan perceives Pope as lacking confidence in his leadership position. During England's recent 190-run win over Sri Lanka at Lord’s, Pope delivered disappointing batting performances, scoring just one and 17 runs. Overall, he has accumulated only 30 runs across four innings in the series, prompting concerns about his stability at the crease and growing criticism of his captaincy.

Though Pope managed to effectively rotate bowlers and implement innovative field placements, he faced the challenge of eight unsuccessful reviews—a situation that raised doubts about whether the pressures of captaincy are affecting his performance.

"Ollie Pope is an excellent vice-captain for England, complementing Ben Stokes seamlessly. He is a diligent worker and a genuine team player who can offer strategic guidance while thriving in a supportive capacity. However, I believe he is more suited to the vice-captain role rather than stepping up to captain," Vaughan wrote in his column for The Telegraph.

"I would be happy to be proven wrong about Pope's leadership abilities. That said, he does appear somewhat insecure. While I understand the decision to appoint him as vice-captain to build his confidence, elevating him to captaincy at this stage seems unwarranted. I anticipate that the focus on his leadership will diminish once Stokes returns from Pakistan."

Vaughan also pointed out Pope's unsettled batting demeanour at number three, remarking, "Not every vice-captain is destined for the captaincy. Some, including myself, excel in leadership roles, taking the initiative rather than serving as a strategist off to the side."

"I truly hope Pope can emerge from his current slump and regain his form. Ultimately, his batting should take precedence, especially since his role as captain is likely to be temporary," he added.

"By assigning the captaincy to Pope at this juncture, England has placed undue pressure on him while he was starting to find his footing at No. 3, having shown promise against the West Indies earlier this summer, only to be unexpectedly thrust into this leadership role."

Vaughan also expressed his belief that Harry Brook should be groomed as England's next Test captain, suggesting that Joe Root could potentially step in temporarily if needed. "Looking to the future, Harry Brook appears to be a more natural fit for the captaincy; his style makes him a suitable successor to Stokes.

"If there arises another interim period during Stokes's injury, would it really be so wrong to temporarily return the captaincy to Joe Root? It wouldn’t be viewed as a step backward; rather, he would simply manage a series with Stokes sure to return and still influencing the dressing room."
