Rishabh Pant back in Test cricket following a severe accident in December 2022, played a pivotal role in India’s remarkable victory over Bangladesh in Chennai, scoring a century in the second innings. Former Australian cricketer Ian Chappell believes Pant will again be a crucial figure for India as they head to Australia in November, citing the wicketkeeper’s importance in the challenging Australian conditions.
"If Pant plays at his peak, he's the perfect wicketkeeper for Australia. His agility behind the stumps is vital for covering the wide areas on either side of the wicket, which is essential in Australia. A keeper like him not only improves the team's fielding but also gives slip fielders more room to cover," Chappell remarked in his ESPN Cricinfo column.
Pant first gained attention in Australia during India’s famous triumph at the Gabba in January 2021. His heroic innings helped break Australia’s 28-year unbeaten streak at the venue, sealing India’s series victory. Chappell expects Pant to deliver a similar impact in the upcoming Border-Gavaskar series.
Reflecting on his return, Pant shared his emotions after the Chennai Test: "Playing here after my injury was very special. This was my first Test back, and it was emotional. I’m just happy to be back where I belong and to contribute to the team again."
Chappell also commended Pant’s development as a wicketkeeper, especially his improvement against spin bowlers. "Before his injury, Pant had made remarkable progress behind the stumps, going from a keeper with questions to a reliable gloveman. His commitment to refining his skills is clear," Chappell added.
As India prepares for their tour of Australia, Pant’s fitness and form will be critical to the team’s prospects in the much-anticipated series.
