Following Ricky Ponting’s resignation as head coach of the Delhi Capitals, there are indications that the franchise is eyeing a former Indian cricketer for the role. Among the names being considered is former Indian all-rounder Yuvraj Singh, who could return to the Indian Premier League (IPL) after a five-year gap, this time in a coaching capacity. According to a report from *Sportstar*, the Delhi Capitals have approached the 2011 World Cup winner regarding the head coach position, with discussions currently ongoing.
This development follows earlier speculation linking Yuvraj to the coaching role for Gujarat Titans (GT), although recent reports indicate that Ashish Nehra is likely to continue as GT’s head coach. Gujarat Titans are now reportedly searching for an Indian coach to fill the batting coach vacancy left by Gary Kirsten, who has taken over as the head coach of the Pakistan national team.
Ricky Ponting’s departure comes after a seven-season tenure with Delhi Capitals, during which the team struggled, missing the playoffs for the past three seasons. If Yuvraj Singh accepts the offer, it would mark his debut in a coaching role.
Yuvraj’s IPL career spanned from 2008 to 2019, during which he played for several franchises, including Punjab Kings, Pune Warriors India, Delhi Capitals, Royal Challengers Bangalore, and Sunrisers Hyderabad. He concluded his IPL journey with Mumbai Indians in 2019, where he was part of the team’s fourth title win against CSK. Notably, Yuvraj missed the 2012 IPL season due to cancer treatment.
Earlier rumours were suggesting that Sourav Ganguly, who currently serves as the cricket director for Delhi Capitals, might be in line for the head coach position. The former India captain had expressed interest in the role and also oversees the franchise’s sister teams in the ILT20 league (Dubai Capitals) and the SA20 league (Pretoria Capitals).
