South Africa Women vs. Sri Lanka Women, 1st ODI: Tazmin Britt's heroics wasted as rain thwarts Proteas women's bid to beat Sri Lanka

Brits led the way with a commanding 116 off 128 balls, including 12 fours, to guide South Africa to 270/6 in 50 overs before rain intervened in the seventh over of Sri Lanka's innings, resulting in no score.

Despite losing the toss and being asked to bat first in overcast conditions at Buffalo Park Stadium, Laura Wolvaardt (41) and the Brits forged a formidable opening partnership for the home side.

The pair shared a half-century stand in the first powerplay, taking South Africa to 55/0 after 10 overs, before Brits brought up her second ODI fifty.

The partnership was broken when Wolvaardt was caught behind off the bowling of Kaveesha Dilhari (2/47), leaving the Proteas at 96/1 after 20 overs.

They then found a new ally in Anneke Bosch (39) as they pushed South Africa past the 100-run mark. They reached 154/1 in 30 overs before Bosch fell, ending her 70-run partnership with Oshadi Ranasinghe (2/42).

Brits then added 40 runs in partnership with Suné Luus (22) before Luus departed in the 41st over to Sungadika Kumari (2/67).

In a remarkable innings, Brits reached her second ODI hundred in the 42nd over, but soon lost another partner in Marizanne Kapp (6), leaving the Proteas at 220/4 from 44 overs.

Brits' exceptional innings ended on 116 in the 46th over when she attempted to loft the ball over the bowler's head and Kumari took a comfortable catch at the boundary.

With less than four overs remaining, all-rounder Nadine de Klerk's 22-ball 34 and Delmi Tucker's 8* took South Africa to a commanding 270/6 from their allotted 50 overs.

In reply, Sri Lanka openers Vishmi Gunaratne (9*) and captain Chamari Athapaththu (12*) got their side off to a solid start and reached 23/0 after 6.5 overs before heavy rain interrupted play.

After a prolonged delay, the teams settled for a draw, with each side earning one ICC Women's Championship point.

The second ODI will be played at the Kimberley Oval in Kimberley on Saturday, April 13 at 14:00.
